The Save a Copy command has no options. No dialog box appears when saving a copy of a file in this manner. You can't specify a filename or select a destination folder, for example.

You can also use the Save a Copy command to simultaneously make copies of multiple pictures. Before issuing the command, -click each picture that you want to copy. (When selecting pictures to copy, use Hold to add pictures from multiple folders.)

JPEG files use lossy compression. That is, the higher the compression you select, the more image quality you'll lose. (By comparison, compression algorithms for TIFF files are lossless. That is, no image quality is lost; the files are simply made smaller.) If you're exporting digital photos that will only be viewed onscreen, you can safely apply much higher compression before its effects are evident onscreen. However, if you intend to print the exported files or edit them in another program, you'll want to keep compression to a minimumuse a JPEG setting close to 100%.

If you've previously exported images from the current folder, you can select the previous destination folder. Doing so prevents the creation of a new subfolder.

Gift CDs reflect edits you've made in Picasa. The resulting images can be viewed in any programnot just Picasa.

When creating a Gift CD, Picasa tells you how much data will be written and the number of discs required. A blank CD holds approximately 650 MB. If you're over that amount, you can pick a smaller image size or reduce the number of images by selecting fewer folders.

The advantage of backing up to a hard disk is that it occurs immediately; no disc shuffling is required. The disadvantage is that if something happens to your computerit's stolen or destroyed, for exampleyour backups will be lost, too.

To later add new and changed files to an existing backup set (performing an incremental backup), choose Tools > Backup Pictures or click the Backup button. Select the set name from the Backup Set drop-down menu, and click Burn.

When performing subsequent backups to the same set, you can add more folders by clicking their check boxes.

When you insert a CD or DVD backup into a PC, PicasaRestore automatically runs. You can restore the files to their original locations or to a new folder. To stop the restoration, click Cancel.

To restore a backup made to a hard drive, open the backup folder on that drive and run the copy of PicasaRestore you find there.

If you want to move Picasa-edited photos to a Mac or Linux system, use the Create a Gift CD procedure rather than Backup.

To delete a backup set, issue the Backup Pictures command, select the set name from the Backup Set drop-down list, and click Delete Set. (Note that if you've been backing up to a hard drive, this does not delete the backup data, too. Quit Picasa and manually delete the files.)
