Last minute touch-up in Acrobat

After incorporating all the comments and finalizing the CD cover design, the document can be sent as a PDF file to an output service provider for printing. This time, the images should not be downsampled when exporting the file as PDF, but the [Press Quality] preset should be used. To see how the Touch-up Text tool works, simply use the file CD Cover HIGHRES.pdf provided in the Lesson09 folder for the following steps.

Once the printer receives the PDF file, he'll simply be able to open the file in Acrobat, and print it. You can tell your client that the file is now with the printer, and that you're going on vacation. The end? Alas, no. Apparently your client now needs one more little change. Unfortunately, you're away at the beach, and the printer has neither the original InDesign file, nor the Photoshop file, only the PDF file. Luckily, Acrobat allows some editing directly in the PDF file.

Suppose the text on the front cover of the CD is to be changed to PORTFOLIO rather than ABOUT US. The printer can open the file in Acrobat and edit the text.

1.

Open the file CD Cover HIGHRES.pdf in Acrobat 7.0

2.

Choose Tools > Advanced Editing > TouchUp Text Tool.

3.

Click the text ABOUT US. Acrobat will take a moment to load some system fonts, then display a frame around these words and place a blinking text cursor where you clicked the text. (See illustration on next page.)

4.

Select the entire text and then type PORTFOLIO.

5.

To increase the spacing between the characters to better match the original design, select the entire text, and then Right-click / Control-click the text and choose Properties from the pop-up menu. In the TouchUp Properties dialog box, increase the Character Spacing to 0.25, and then click Close.

6.

Choose File > Deselect All to see the result.

This was easy! Adobe Acrobat Professional can not only simplify the review process, but also put everything together in a convenient format for the printer. And yet it's flexible enough to allow for the changes that clients request at the last minute. That makes it a lifesaver at every stage of the design process.

Note

Those last minute changes in Acrobat are only a last resort. Although the editing capabilities in Acrobat are quite powerful, you don't have the same control over the text appearance nor access to the full range of OpenType features that you do in InDesign.
