Creating layer comps in Photoshop

Now your work will be to create three layer comps, selecting a different design to be visible in each one.

1.

In the Layers palette, click the eye icons at the left of the two top-most layers to hide them.

Only the content of Layer 1 should now be visible in the document.

2.

Choose Window > Layer Comps to open the Layer Comps palette.

3.

With only the content of the Layer 1 and Background layers visible in the document, click the Create New Layer Comp button at the bottom of the Layer Comps palette.

4.

In the New Layer Comp dialog box, make sure the Visibility check box is selected, and then click OK. If you work with more complex documents, it is generally a good idea to give each layer comp a meaningful name and a brief description.

5.

In the Layers palette, make Layer 2 visible. Since the image in Layer 2 completely covers the content of the image underneath, there is no need to turn off the visibility for Layer 1 and hide it. However, as a matter of best practice, and to clearly indicate your design intention, turn off the visibility of Layer 1 anyway.

6.

With only Layer 2 now visible in the document, click the Create New Layer Comp button at the bottom of the Layer Comps palette.

7.

In the Layer Comp dialog box (Window > Layer Comps), make sure that the check box next to Visibility is selected, and then click OK.

8.

In the Layers palette, make Layer 3 visible, hide Layer 2, and then create a third Layer Comp as described above.

You can switch quickly between the three-layer comp versions of the document by clicking the Apply Previous Selected Layer Comp, or Apply Next Selected Layer Comp arrow buttons at the bottom of the Layer Comps palette. (See illustration on next page.)

In this case, only the visibility of the layers changes, but in general, using layer comps enables you to adjust the visibility, position, and appearance of all layers in the document with a single click. To clean up the work area before moving on, close the Photoshop windows of Idea 1.psd, Idea 2.psd, and Idea 3.psd.
