Lesson overview

In this lesson, you'll learn how to do the following:

Resize, crop and change the resolution of photos in Photoshop.

Use Photoshop's color modes for special effects.

Define crop marks, layers, guides and clipping masks in Illustrator.

Place photos and add text and graphics in Illustrator.

    Use Illustrator's Brushes and Symbols.

Create a 3D comprehensive (dummy) of a bottle and map artwork.

This lesson will take about an hour to complete.

In Lesson 1, you set up a folder called CS2CIB Lessons on your hard disk. For this lesson, copy the Lesson03 folder from the Adobe Creative Suite 2 Classroom in a Book CD into the CS2CIB Lessons folder.

In this lesson, your project is to design a label for a wine bottle. You will use Photoshop to prepare a background image, and then do the layout in Illustrator, placing the background image and adding text and other graphics. Finally, you will preview the label design on a 3D comprehensive of a bottle.

There are a number of items that have to be included on this label. The front of the label must display the brand name; this will be "Chalet," and the product name, "Merlot." Grape leaves are the theme for the graphics on the front of the label. On the back of the label will be general facts about the winery, any legally required text, and additional information about the wine.

You will start this project by creating the image used as the background pattern on the front of the label.

Resampling Images

Resampling is the process of changing the number of pixels in an image. Upsampling increases the number of pixels while downsampling reduces it.

The lower-resolution image can't be as detailed as the higher resolution imagewith downsampling you lose information as you reduce the file size. That's OK in some cases, such as when displaying pictures on screen, where a resolution of 72 ppi (pixels per inch) is normal.
