  • Designing a label in Illustrator

    1.

Start Illustrator, and choose File > New. In the New Document dialog box, select Letter from the Size pop-up menu, click the Landscape Orientation button, and choose CMYK Color Mode. Name the document winelabel.ai, and click OK.

You will now create a black rectangle as background for the wine label, and set up crop marks the same size as the rectangle.

    2.

Select the Rectangle tool from the toolbox and click once somewhere near the left edge of the page. In the Rectangle dialog box enter 700 pt as Width and 190 pt as Height (if you don't have Points selected as your document's default units, Illustrator will automatically convert the values you enter to these units), then click OK. Using the Selection tool to drag the rectangle, position it in the middle of the page.

    3.

In the Layers palette, select Layer 1 and choose Duplicate "Layer 1" from the Layers palette menu.

    4.

Still in the Layers palette, click the Layer 1 target indicator (the small circle to the right of the layer name). This will select the rectangle on Layer 1.

    5.

Choose Object > Crop Area > Make.

    6.

In the Layers menu, double-click the Layer 1 name to bring up the Layers Options dialog box. In the Layers Options dialog box, name the layer crop marks and click OK.

    7.

Double-click the Layer 1 copy name in the Layers palette and, in the Layers Options dialog box, change the name to background and click OK.

    8.

Choose the Selection tool and select the rectangle in the background layer.

    9.

With the Fill button activated in the toolbox, click the Black swatch in the Swatches palette. Activate the Stroke button in the toolbox and set it to None.

Now you have created a black rectangle on which you will place the images and text.

    10.

Choose File > Place. Locate the file background.psd in the Lesson03 folder, inside the CS2CIB Lessons folder. Make sure Link is selected, and then click Place. (See illustration on next page.)

Illustrator will place the image in the center of your document window.

    11.

Using the Selection tool, position the placed Photoshop image towards the left end of the black rectangle as shown in the illustration below. You can use the arrow keys on the keyboard to make some fine adjustments to arrive at the final position.

    12.

Choose File > Save As. In the Save As dialog box, select Adobe Illustrator (Windows) or Illustrator document (Mac OS) as Format. Save the document as winelabel.ai in the Lesson03 folder, accepting the default settings in both the Save As and Illustrator Options dialog boxes.
