  • Creating a 3D comprehensive

To present the packaging label, or to quickly check out different structural designs, Illustrator has a great feature, the three-dimensional (3D) effect. This will enable you to transform two-dimensional artwork into three-dimensional objects. For example, you will now turn the drawing of an outline of a bottle shape into a realistic looking 3D comprehensive. Since 3D Revolve is implemented as an Effect, modifying the outline will result in a different bottle shape.

A simple line drawing of a wine bottle is the starting point to create a 3D comprehensive or mock-up. The Lesson03 folder contains an Illustrator file prepared for this purpose. The color of the line drawing determines the color of the bottlein this case a bottle green hue.

    1.

In Illustrator, open the file called bottle-drawing.ai, located inside the Lesson03 folder, inside the CS2CIB Lessons folder.

In the top part of the document there is a line drawing of the outline of half a bottle. At the bottom of the page is an image of the label you have just created.

    2.

With the Selection tool, select the line drawing in the top part of the page, and then choose Effect > 3D > Revolve.

    3.

In the 3D Revolve Options dialog box, turn on Preview, and then without changing any settings for now, click OK. (See illustration on next page.)

That's it! You've designed a 3D comprehensive of a wine bottle. Of course the bottle would look nicer if the label could be attached to it. This will be the next step.
