  • Mapping artwork

To get a first impression of how the label will look on a bottle, the artwork can be mapped on the 3D model. For a quick reference, a lower resolution version of the original Illustrator artwork is sufficient and helps save processing time.

    1.

With the Selection tool, click the image of the wine label in the lower part of the document to select it, and then drag it over the Symbols palette (Window > Symbols), and release the pointer.

You have added a new symbol to the Symbols palette.

    2.

Double-click the new symbol in the Symbols palette to display the Symbols Options dialog box. In the Symbols Options dialog box, rename the new symbol to winelabel, and click OK.

    3.

Click the wine bottle to select it, and then double-click 3D Revolve in the Appearance palette to open the 3D Revolve Options dialog box.

    4.

In the Symbol Options dialog box, select Preview, and then click Map Art.

    5.

Select Preview in the Map Art dialog box, and then select surface number 12 of 18 by clicking the arrow icons next to the word Surface.

    6.

Select the winelabel symbol from the Symbol pop-up menu.

The image of the winelabel will appear in the surface mapping area of the Map Art dialog box, and you can see in the document window a preview of the label mapped to the wine bottle.

    7.

Click the winelabel image in the Map Art dialog box, and drag it to the left edge and upper half of surface 12. Then, click the center handle on the right side of the label, hold down the shift key, scale the image to be flush right with the surface, and release the pointer.

    8.

Click OK to close the Map Art dialog box.

    9.

In the 3D Revolve Options dialog box, use the position tools to rotate the bottle to get a nice view of the front of the label, and then click OK.

Done! Now you have a good idea of how the label will sit on the bottle, and what further refinements might be needed. However, the best way to check is (and will always be!) to print out the label, wrap it around a real glass bottle, hold it in your hands and place it next to other bottles. Nothing's better than the real thing!
