5.8. Summary

This chapter discussed the DB2 environment and its environment variables and DB2 profile registry. It explained how to list the contents of environment variables and how to modify them either temporarily or permanently.

It also described how to manipulate the DB2 profile registry variables with the

db2set command. The different levels of the DB2 profile registry were explained, as well as the priority that DB2 takes into consideration when the same variable is set at different levels.

There was a detailed explanation of instances, and it showed how an instance can be created, dropped, started, stopped, and configured. It also described the Database Administration Server (DAS), which is a background process that needs to be running at the database server to allow remote DB2 clients to graphically administer a database server. The chapter also discussed the similarity between configuring instance and database configuration parameters.

After reading this chapter you should have a solid background on how to work and manage instances as well as how to configure a database.
