Chapter 7. Working with Database Objects

In this chapter we discuss the various objects that may exist in your database, such as tables, indexes, views, sequence objects, and stored procedures. We also describe the different data types supported by DB2. This chapter is closely related to Chapter 8, The DB2 Storage Model, where the implementation and manipulation of several of these objects is explained, and to Chapter 9, Leveraging the Power of SQL, which explains how to work with these database objects using the SQL language.

In this chapter you will learn about:

  • The big picture of the DB2 database objects

  • The definitions of databases, database partitions, partition groups, buffer pools, and table spaces

  • The DB2 data types

  • How to work with tables, indexes, views, and schemas

  • The definition of application-related objects like packages, triggers, user-defined functions, stored procedures, and sequences
