Understanding Shape Tweens

You use shape tweens to morph shapes and lines in Flash MX 2004. As you learned in the last chapter, motion tweens change the location or appearance of an object. Shape tweens can actually modify the shape of the drawing itself, however. The shapes and lines that you morph must be vector drawings in a SWF file that you create using the drawing tools in Flash, or vectors in another program such as Adobe Illustrator or Macromedia FreeHand. You might make your vector drawings by using a mouse, or you might use a graphics tablet. In the following section, "Using the Drawing Tools," you learn about which drawing tools are available in Flash.

Animating with Shape Hints."

To create a shape tween, you draw one shape on the Stage; later on, you draw a second shape on the same layer. Flash calculates and creates the animation between those two points on the Timeline, like a motion tween. Although you can shape tween one or more shapes, tweening a single shape typically yields the best results. If you choose to tween multiple shapes together, they must be on the same layer. To tween text or bitmaps, you must "break apart" the text or image first, so it is represented as raw data. You use this command later in Exercise 9.

Chapter 2 to create a natural feeling to the motion.

In the following sections, you explore the drawing tools in Flash that you need to create the vector drawings you will modify using shape tweens.
