Benefits and Drawbacks of Timeline Effects

There are several benefits and drawbacks to using Timeline effects. First, test the various Timeline effects in an FLA file and determine whether they are beneficial to you. You might find that the effects are not terribly useful to (or match) your designs. The limited convenience is perhaps the biggest drawback of the Timeline effects that install with Flash. The Blur effect doesn't really blur the way many designers might expect, and "Explode" tends to look too chunky for a useful effect.

However, the Copy to Grid and Distributed Duplicate effects might be useful to many designs. These effects simply duplicate symbols instead of creating an animation. There are many designs that need to duplicate the same graphic on the Stage, such as tiled graphics (Figure B.1), so this effect makes that task a lot quicker and easier to accomplish.

Timeline effects are easy to add and remove from a document, so take the time to explore their usefulness to your own designs and presentations. For this book, these effects would not have added any value to the SWF files that you created. However, because Timeline effects are part of the extensibility layer in Flash (what developers use to build extensionswhich are essentially plug-ins), you might find a third-party download that is useful for your work.
