IANA

(Internet Assigned Numbers Authority)

An organization responsible for allocating IP addresses, assigning protocol parameters, and managing domain names.

ICMP

(Internet Control Message Protocol)

A message-control and error-reporting protocol used between host servers and gateways. For example, some Internet software applications use it to send a packet on a roundtrip between two hosts to determine roundtrip times and discover problems on the network.

IEEE

An engineering group that defines electrical interconnect standards.

IGMP

(Internet Group Management Protocol)

An Internet protocol used by hosts and routers to send packets to lists of hosts that want to participate, which is known as multicasting. QuickTime Streaming Server uses multicast addressing, as does Service Location Protocol (SLP).

IMAP

(Internet Message Access Protocol)

A networking protocol used to access electronic mail stored in a mail server's IMAP database. It is different from POP because the IMAP database is designed to store mail on the server for more flexible user access.

IPv6

(Internet Protocol version 6)

The latest version of the protocol, which includes improvements over IPv4, including 128-bit addresses rather than 32-bit addresses, and defines the rules for unicast, anycast, and multicast. These improvements were included to anticipate future growth of the Internet.

ISO 9660

Standard CD-ROM file system that allows you to read the same CD-ROM disc whether you are on a PC, Mac, or other major computer platform.

ISP

(Internet Service Provider)

A company that provides a connection between client computers and the Internet.
