Lesson 8. Networking Configuration and Troubleshooting

Time

This lesson takes approximately 1 hour, 30 minutes to complete.

Goals

Describe basic networking concepts and terms

Use Network preferences to configure Mac OS X to receive an IP address from a DHCP server, communicate with other computers on the same network, and access network services

Use Network Diagnostics, Network Utility, and Network preferences to troubleshoot networking issues

One of the strengths of Mac OS X is its integration with network and Internet services. Network data storage, such as iDisks (one of the ben efits of an optional .Mac subscription), can be mounted and accessed just as if it was a local disk drive. iCal and Address Book are able to seamlessly store and retrieve calendar and contact data over a network, allowing data to be synchronized between multiple computers. With just one click, users can purchase a song online and have it downloaded and added to their iTunes Music Library. However, the key to accessing those services is the correct configuration of network hardware and software.

While Mac OS X simplifies network configuration, there are still times when you will need to create a specific network configuration or trouble shoot a network issue. In this lesson you will learn basic network ing concepts and how to set up and troubleshoot Mac OS X network configurations.
