A1:
Basic network configuration can be done using the Network Setup Assistant. Additional or advanced configuration is done in Network preferences. Configuration and connection to remote networks through PPP, PPPoE, and VPN is done with Internet Connect.
A2:
Static IP addresses are those that are manually set in Network preferences. The computer always uses the same address. Dynamic addresses are those that are either assigned by a DHCP server, or when a DHCP server is unavailable, created by the computer. Unlike static addresses, a dynamic address is not permanent and will change.
A3:
Ping, Lookup, Traceroute, and Port Scan aid in troubleshooting.
A4:
Ping sends signals to another computer on the Internet to see if that computer echoes.
A5:
Traceroute traces the route through the Internet from your computer to the destination computer and shows the number of hops needed to make the journey. This is useful in determining where any network delays are occurring.
A6:
You can use Port Scan to determine if certain ports that should be open are in fact open.
