Providing Other Network Services

In addition to sharing files and providing web services, Mac OS X includes network services that provide other functionality. Remote Login allows users to use Secure Shell (SSH) to log in to your computer from another Macintosh computer, or even another platform. Remote Apple Events allow applications on other computers to execute Apple events on your computer.

Consider the security implications before you enable Remote Login or Remote Apple Events. Anyone who logs in to your computer via SSH can run applications remotely, and secure FTP is automatically enabled when you enable Remote Login. Enabling Remote Apple Events allows users to create an application on another computer that sends Apple events that control applications running on your computer. Remote Login or Remote Apple Events potentially give control of your computer to other users on your network.

Xgrid is a new feature in Mac OS X 10.4 that allows computers on a network to work together in a grid to process a job. Administrators of Mac OS X Server can group locally networked computers into grids. Xgrid participation is available for any computer using Mac OS X 10.2.8 or later. If you want to make your computer available for use as part of a grid, select the Xgrid option.
