Chapter 1: The Lay of the Land

OVERVIEW

You've got to start somewhere, and for learning game audio, "somewhere" is here. No sample programs yet—just a heavy dose of concepts and vocabulary to ensure that you're ready for the chapters to come. If you have a background in computer music, you might know most of this already.

In this chapter, you'll learn core digital audio principles—how your computer hears and sings. You'll also be subjected to a short history of video game audio with a quiz at the end (no, not really). Finally, I'll present a couple of ways to wiggle out of writing your own game engine by licensing one, or downloading a free one. I decided to put the engine list first so that you wouldn't spend weeks with this book, get to the end, and say, "You mean I could have downloaded an engine?!?!"
