I hope this chapter has given you some of the core concepts you need to implement a cool-looking spectrum analyzer. Also, and more poetically, I hope that this chapter has given you an appreciation for the elegant simplicity of sound waves. To me, it's amazing that everything we hear— from opera to explosions to human voices—is because different frequencies of waves are causing different sections of our cochlea to resonate. There's much more to the Discrete Fourier Transform than I've covered here. In fact, the DFT is one of those things that can be explained from many different angles, some of which use some highly advanced math. If you're the kind of person who enjoys jaunts down roads filled with imaginary numbers and integrals, I encourage you to explore in more mathematical detail the nature of the DFT and the FFT. I've provided some links on your CD to get you started.
