Appendix A: Creating Dynamic Music

OVERVIEW

Take off your programmer hat, and put on your musician hat. This appendix walks you through the creation of all the parts needed for a simple dynamic musical score.

This tutorial concentrates on the concepts of creating dynamic music, not the mechanics of making the DirectMusic Producer GUI work. I provide the occasional screenshot that you can validate your progress against, but if you're having issues with the DirectMusic Producer GUI, you should consult the online help and/or the tutorial that Microsoft provides with the software.

Also, this tutorial keeps things fairly simple, musically. In real life, you'll want your scores to be more interesting than what's presented here; in this appendix, I provide only the bare minimum needed to clearly illustrate dynamic music's features. This means that at the end of this tutorial, you'll have a piece of dynamic music containing only two or three parts. Of course, once you read through this appendix, you can always go back and flesh out the music!

You'll start by learning how to install DirectMusic Producer, and how to create static (unchanging) music using it. You'll then learn how to add elements that change your static song into a dynamic song.
