Table of ContentsChapter 1.
An Introduction to Windows CE

CE Platforms

To complicate things a bit more than with the desktop versions of Windows, Windows CE has the notion of platforms, which can be markedly different even within the same version of Windows CE. Early commercially available Windows CE devices, such as the Casio E-10, ran Windows CE 1.0 and then 2.0 on the Palm-size PC platform. Then came Windows CE 2.11 and the Handheld PC and Handheld PC Pro platform, and most recently Windows CE 3.0 and the Pocket PC and HPC 2000 platforms.

Palm-Size PC

The earliest platform supported by eMbedded Visual Basic, and probably the earliest platform you can find anymore, is the Palm-size PC.

The Palm-size PC tried to keep the look and feel of the desktop Windows operating systems, but in a smaller package. There is still a taskbar at the bottom of the screen and a Start button at the lower left corner (see Figure 1.1), and the typical action to perform is a double screen tap, just like a double-click on the desktop.
