Final Thoughts

We’ve covered some of the basics of content encoding in this chapter. Chapter 7 goes into more detail on this, as part of our discussion of all the dirty tricks spammers use. There is a lot of room for abuse with these particular encodings, which is why it’s necessary to identify and decode them.

Encoding has its practical uses, so it’s hard to hate it completely, but modern-day spam filters should at least be aware of these encodings and have routines for managing them.
