Chapter 16. Managing Shared Resources

A

SERVER IS A MACHINE THAT MAKES ITS local resources available on a network. A client is a machine that makes use of those resources. Servers give. Clients take. It is the ultimate symbiotic relationship.

This chapter covers network services and how to make them available to clients. In the creaky old OSI networking model, the services covered by this chapter reside at Layer 7, the application layer. The services fall into these general categories:

  • File, print, fax, and desktop sharing services

  • Universal Plug-and-Play services

  • Internet services

  • Telephony services, including web telephony

  • Client/server applications

This chapter covers file, printer, and fax sharing. The first part of the chapter contains a functional overview of classic file and print sharing in a peer networking environment. The remaining topics cover new features in Windows Server 2003 along with those Windows 2000 services that continue to be useful.
