Disabling NetBIOS-over-TCP/IP Name Resolution
After you have completed the transition to Windows Server 2003 and Windows 2000 servers and desktops, you can disable NetBIOS-over-TCP/IP name resolution and use DNS exclusively. Windows Server 2003 and Windows 2000 computers exchange SMB traffic over TCP port 445. Eliminating NetBIOS-over-TCP/IP name resolution results in a substantial reduction in network traffic.Practically speaking, you cannot get rid of NetBIOS-over-TCP/IP name resolution completely until you've purged all downlevel Windows clients and servers from your network. Classic services such as Browser and Messenger rely on Netbt services to function. When you're ready to make the transition, proceed as shown in Procedure 4.7.Procedure 4.7 Disabling NetBIOS-over-TCP/IP Name Resolution
