Acknowledgments

The best part of writing a book is the opportunity to work with gifted, passionate professionals. This book would not have been possible without their help and encouragement. I was doubly fortunate because this project was handled by two organizations within Pearson Education: New Riders and Addison-Wesley. I'd like to introduce you to some of the team so I can thank them individually.

The production editor for the majority of the project was Stacia Mellinger at New Riders. Stacia's patience and unswerving devotion to quality was both a challenge and an inspiration. Her hard work, enthusiasm, and good humor made this a tremendously enjoyable project. Stacia turned the project over to Jacquelyn Doucette, production manager at Addison-Wesley. Jacquelyn handled the thousand-and-one final details with an admirable finesse. Tyrrell Albaugh was the production manager who handled all the work caused by the last-minute name change. Thank you all for making this such an enjoyable experience.

The copy editor was Kelli Brooks. Kelli's eye for detail kept the book consistent and readable. Even more, her incredible ability to find meaning within lingo kept the contents pointed at true north no matter how much I swerved about.

The graphics editor was Michael Labonne from New Riders. Mike had the difficult task of taking my sketches and turning them into production-quality diagrams. He found out very quickly why my sixth-grade teacher encouraged me to be a writer instead of an artist.

The acquisition editors were Elise Walter and Jeff Riley from New Riders and Sondra Scott from Addison-Wesley. Jeff crusaded for a Windows Server 2003 title and paved the way for the book you hold in your hands. Elise brought fresh ideas and boundless good cheer to the project, and Sondra stoically stood by the project during the long months as Microsoft slipped its schedules to finalize the product.

The tough job of technical editing fell to two amazing individuals: David Shackelford and Bob Reinsch. Dave and Bob not only brought vast insight and experience to the project, but their insistence on clarity in every paragraph made them diligent advocates for you, the reader. Every writer wishes for peer reviewers of this caliber. There are not enough words to thank Dave and Bob adequately.

Many other folks at New Riders and Addison-Wesley, too numerous to mention, had a hand in making this book an attractive, high-quality product with an affordable price tag. Special thanks to Stephanie Wall from New Riders for all her help, encouragement, and professionalism in the turnover of the project to Addison-Wesley.

I'd like to end by thanking friends who helped out during the two years it took to finish this project. My colleague, Todd Logan, was unfailingly generous with his time, knowledge, and resources. His help was absolutely crucial to the completion of this book. I'm also indebted to Jeremy Moskowitz at Braincore, who freely lent me his expertise in group policy and Active Directory design as I worked through many different scenarios. Todd and Jeremy have a remarkable ability to see the essentials of a problem. They were not shy about pointing out flaws in my reasoning and my research.
