Chapter 19: The Solaris 9 Network Environment

In this chapter, you will

  • Gain an understanding of Solaris networking functions

  • Review networking capabilities

  • Investigate routing concepts

Solaris networks are comprised of Class A, B, and C subnets interconnected by routers. The simplest Solaris network consists of two hosts connected using a hub or crossover cable, to form a single Class C subnet. However, many larger Solaris networks are comprised of many Class C subnets that are connected to each other, perhaps as part of a large Class B network. In this chapter, we’ll examine some networking basics that are essential for understanding more complex topics, such as routing. We’ll also look at a typical network service—the File Transfer Protocol (FTP) daemon—to examine how low-level networking is used to implement high-level system services.
