Working with Preset Animations

PowerPoint includes over 30 animation schemes that you can apply to slides. Animation schemes are preset combinations of animation effects for the entry and exit of the slide's content. Most of these schemes involve making one part of the slide appear before another part. The title might appear first, and then the bullets, for example, or each bullet point might appear individually each time you click the mouse. There might also be separate entry and exit animations. Some of the preset animations also include sound effects.

An animation scheme provides an easy way to get started with animations. You can then customize the animation (covered later in this chapter) as you gain more proficiency with the feature. For example, you might choose a scheme that fades letters in quickly on the slide and then modify it later so that they fade in a little more slowly.

Caution

Be careful not to overuse special effects such as animation. The audience can quickly turn from thinking "what a cool effect!" to "what a silly show off!" if you use too many effects or use effects too frequently.

You can apply an animation scheme either from Normal or Slide Sorter view. It doesn't make much difference; both work equally well. However, for custom animation, Normal is your only choice.

PowerPoint groups animation schemes into three categories: Subtle, Moderate, and Exciting. These refer to the amount of activity involved in each one and provide a guide for which one might be appropriate. For example, you might want one of the Exciting schemes on the first or last slide, and one of the Moderate schemes on some of the important slides in between. A Subtle scheme might work well for an "ordinary" slide.

To apply an animation scheme, select the slide on which you want to apply it, and choose Slide Show⇨Animation Schemes. The Slide Design task pane appears showing the animation schemes as shown in Figure 13-6. From there, simply click the desired scheme. It will preview automatically on the slide. If you miss it, you can click the Play button to replay it.

Figure 13-6: Select an animation scheme for the selected slide.

If you select an animation effect and the task pane immediately reverts back to No Animation being selected, then the effect is not available for the content on the selected slide.

Caution

Some problems with anti-aliasing have been reported with animated text on some backgrounds. Here's an article that sums up the findings: www.powerpointanswers.com/researchsummaryl.

As with transition effects, you can apply an Animation Scheme to all the slides by clicking Apply to All Slides, if desired. However, animation schemes implement themselves differently on slides with different kinds of content, so you will want to make sure you watch the entire presentation after applying an animation scheme globally to make sure the effects work appropriately on each slide.

Creating Your Own Preset Animations

Ever wonder where the preset animation schemes come from? They're provided by Microsoft, of course, but what you might not know is that they're stored in a file called quikanim.ppt, stored in Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office 11\1033, and you can edit it.

Here's what to do:

Make a backup copy of quikanim.ppt first, from a file management window. If the original is read-only, remove that attribute in the file's Properties.

In PowerPoint, move to the end of the presentation and insert a new slide. Apply the Title Slide layout to it.

Enter the category name in the Title placeholder (such as User Defined) and enter the desired name for the new scheme in the Sub Title placeholder.

Right-click on the Title placeholder, select Custom Animation, and add whatever effects you want to it. Repeat the process for the subtitle.

Choose Insert⇨Duplicate Slide and apply the Title & Text layout to it. Apply custom animation to it as desired.

Save and exit.

If you turned off the read-only attribute for quikanim.ppt, turn it back on.

You can also use this same technique to change the category of the existing custom animations (Subtle, Moderate, Exciting, and so on). Just change the category in the Title placeholder for the desired slide.
