The New Features

In terms of new features, PowerPoint 2003 is a rather minor update to PowerPoint 2002, the previous version. However, there are a few really great new features to enjoy!

The PowerPoint Viewer

One of the biggest benefits of PowerPoint 2003 over all earlier versions is its vastly improved version of the PowerPoint Viewer. The PowerPoint Viewer is an external program that you can distribute freely to anyone in your potential audience who might not have a full version of PowerPoint installed on his or her PC. It enables people to watch PowerPoint shows without having to shell out the money to buy PowerPoint.

The PowerPoint Viewer has not been updated in a long time. The last version of it came with PowerPoint 97, and that same old, tired version has been circulating ever since. Because that software was designed to display presentations created in PowerPoint 97, it does not support any of the new features that have been introduced in PowerPoint 2000, 2002, or 2003. That's why this new update is so important. At last you have a Viewer that can display almost all of the new features that PowerPoint itself can display.

Package for CD

Here's my favorite of the new features in PowerPoint 2003. Remember the old Pack and Go feature in earlier PowerPoint versions? You could use it to package a presentation and all its support files in one location so you could transfer it to some other location. That was all well and good, but the Package for CD feature lets you package the presentation-along with the PowerPoint Viewer-directly onto a writeable CD. Nothing has to be installed on the recipient's computer in order for it to run.

Windows Media Player Support

PowerPoint 2003 lets you play some media clips using the same internal controls as the Windows Media Player, rather than through separate media player controls. This makes clip playing faster, easier, and less buggy.

Research Pane

All Office 2003 applications now include a Research pane, which is connected to research sites on the Internet. The Thesaurus and Dictionary work as part of this pane now, and you can also look things up in online encyclopedias and news services with just a few clicks.

SharePoint Team Services

Here's another cool new Office-in-general feature for Office 2003 that also works with PowerPoint. With a server application called Windows SharePoint Services, users can set up Web-based SharePoint team sites that enable groups of people to share files and have discussions. This makes it much easier for groups of people to collaborate on draft presentations when they are not physically located in the same place.

Internet Faxing

PowerPoint 2003 comes with a Send to Fax Service capability that enables you to fax things without having to actually have a fax machine. This subscription-based service works through the Internet and it's not just for PowerPoint, but for all Office applications.

OneNote and Tablet PC Integration

In all Office 2003 applications you can interact with a Tablet PC. For example, in PowerPoint you can use the writing capabilities of a Tablet PC to mark up a presentation and save your marked-up annotations. Handwriting integration is accomplished through a utility called OneNote, which can be used with any PC, not just the Tablet PC.

Saving Annotations

And speaking of annotations, with PowerPoint 2003 you can save all those marks, scribbles, notes, or whatever that you jotted down using the Pen feature in Slide Show view. They are called annotations, and you can now preserve them after leaving Slide Show view.

More Pen Options

In earlier versions of PowerPoint you had just one pen type to choose from in Slide Show view. In PowerPoint 2003 you have several pen types, each one with a different shape or thickness of tip. You can also choose from a rainbow of pen colors.
