Tips for Effective Templates

Now that you know how templates are created and maintained, try these ideas in your work:

The default storage location for user templates is specific to you as a Windows user. If someone else logs into the same PC using a different name, they won't be able to access your templates. Therefore, if you want to share your templates with other users of the local PC, store them in a folder that everyone can access. Then, create a shortcut to that folder in the default Templates folder so you can access it quickly.

The above idea also goes for sharing your templates on a network. You can place them on a centrally accessible network drive, and then create a shortcut to that network location in the default Templates folder for easy access to it.

If your company requires that certain elements always exist on every presentation, such as the company's name or logo, add it to the Microsoft-supplied templates. Open each one's template file (POT), edit the Slide Master to include the required text or graphic, and then save it back to its original location.

Clean up the AutoContent Wizard by removing any templates from it that you never use. This does not delete the templates from the hard disk-it only removes them from the wizard. To do so, click the template and click Remove in the Wizard (on the screen shown in Figure 2-5). You can always add them back in later if you decide you want them there.

Take advantage of the multiple masters feature in PowerPoint 2003 to create different masters that use different color schemes. Chapter 3 covers masters in great detail.
