Working with Layers

You can stack objects on top of each other to create special effects, as you've already seen in this book. For example, you might create a logo by stacking a text box on top of an oval or rectangle.

Tip

Remember, you can type text directly into an AutoShape; you don't have to place a text box on top of it necessarily. Right-click it, choose Add Text, and then type the text.

By default, objects stack in the order that you create them. For example, in Figure 7-35, the lightning bolt appears over the starburst because the starburst was created first. You can move the shapes around, but whenever they overlap they will continue to be stacked in the order shown.

Figure 7-35: Two AutoShapes stacked.

If you need to reorder the objects in a stack, follow these steps:

Click an object. You can work with any object in the stack, although it may be difficult to select an object that is buried under another object.

Choose Draw⇨Order and then choose the command that reflects what you want to do with that object:

Send to Back sends that object to the very back of the pile.

Send Backward sends that object back one position in the pile (assuming there are more than two objects).

Bring Forward brings that object forward one position.

Bring to Front sends that object to the very front of the pile.

Repeat steps 1 and 2 for each object until all objects are in the order you want them.
