Extending Windows Media Player’s Capabilities

Fine as it is, Windows Media Player is still a work in progress. Microsoft provides updates periodically, and you can check for the availability of an update at any time by choosing Help, Check For Player Updates. If new components are available, a list of them will be displayed, and you can choose to install or not install any component.

To have Windows Media Player check for updates automatically at regular intervals, choose Tools, Options. On the Media Player tab, select Once A Day, Once A Week, or Once A Month. The default is Once A Month.

You suspect you have a faulty codec.

It’s unlikely that an installed codec will give you trouble. But if you suspect that is happening, follow these steps to manage the codecs installed on your computer:

  1. Open Sounds And Audio Devices in Control Panel.

  2. On the Hardware tab, choose Audio Codecs or Video Codecs from the Devices list. Click the Properties button.

  3. When the Audio Codecs or Video Codecs properties dialog box opens, go to its Properties tab.

  4. Right-click the codec you’re concerned about and—you guessed it—click Properties once more.

In the codec’s properties dialog box you’ll find a priority number. When two codecs are available to Windows Media Player for processing the same kind of media, Media Player uses the one with the lower priority number. If you want, you can change a codec’s priority by entering a different number. Alternatively, you can select Do Not Use This Codec to disable the codec altogether. If doing this solves your problem, you can try contacting the codec’s vendor to obtain an update. If it doesn’t, you can return to this properties dialog box to reenable the codec.

In the same dialog box, directly below these three options, you’ll find a check box labeled Download Codecs Automatically. A codec is a software component used to compress and decompress digital media. Before a sound or video clip can be streamed to your computer from an Internet site, your computer must be equipped with a suitable codec. You don’t have to be concerned about finding and installing codecs yourself. If Download Codecs Automatically is selected (as it is by default), providers of streamed media will download needed codecs to you without your having to do anything. If the check box is clear, media providers will prompt for permission before downloading a new codec.
