Automated Systems Recovery

The Automated Systems Recovery (ASR) process replaces the Windows 2000 Emergency Repair process. The Emergency Repair process allows restoration of corrupt system files without a format, whereas ASR does not. When ASR is initialized, it copies the system folders to backup media and critical startup information, such as the disk configuration to a floppy disk. It only copies system files that would be necessary to restart the computer: the boot volume and the system volume. It does not copy data files. (You can choose to back up all data on the computer, and this option backs up data and ASR data. You will need a floppy disk at the end of the backup to create the ASR disk.) Instead of restoring a failed system by reinstalling the OS and then applying a backup tape, ASR automates the process. The disk and the media can be used to recover a system when a system dies. The installation CD-ROM will also be necessary. An ASR set (files on backup media and floppy) should be kept in a secure place. Like system state backup, an ASR set might allow an attacker to compromise your system. It also might allow him or her to set up a rogue server and spoof your server, thereby collecting important or sensitive information from other servers and users. Keep the floppy and media set together; you must have matched floppy and backup media in order to use them to recover a server.

To make an ASR set, follow these steps:

1.

Start the Backup Wizard (advanced).

2.

Select the Automated System Recovery Wizard and click Next.

3.

Enter a name for the backup file, select a location for backup, and then click Next.

4.

Information about the system is collected, and then the progress wizard displays the estimated time the backup will take and its estimated size.

5.

When the backup is complete, a prompt to insert a floppy disk appears.

6.

Insert the disk and click OK.

7.

After the floppy is made, click Close to close the Backup Progress window.

8.

Determine if specialized drivers for your mass storage driver are necessary and obtain a copy to store with the ASR recovery set.

To use an ASR set to recover, you must have the ASR recovery set (the matched floppy disk and media produced by performing an ASR backup) and the Windows Server 2003 installation disks. You may need specialized drivers for your mass storage driver if driver files on the installation disks cannot be used. The time to find this out is not during the restore. When ASR is run, it inspects the ASR floppy for disk information and restores the disk signatures and volumes that are used by the system to boot. These volumes are known as the critical volumes. Other volumes, such as the normal volumes, are not backed up as part of an ASR backup and are not restored. After critical disks are created, a simple installation of Windows Server 2003 is performed, and then a backup from the backup media is performed.

WARNING: Data Files Stored on System Volumes Will Be Lost

If data files are stored on the critical volumes, they will be lost. A format is done of the boot volume and may be done of the system volume before the restore.

An ASR restore can be done to a different computer than the one it was created on as long as the computer is the same as the previous computer with the following exception: The number of disks must be the same as or more than are needed to restore critical volumes. Hard disks, video cards, and network adapters can differ, but the number and volume of disks must be the same as or greater than the original computer.

1.

Insert the installation CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.

2.

Restart the computer. If prompted to press a key to start from the CD, do so.

3.

Install any special drivers if necessary by pressing F6 when prompted.

4.

Press F2 during the text mode part of setup when prompted to start the ASR recovery.

5.

When prompted, insert the ASR floppy disk.

6.

Follow the instructions.

7.

During restart, you may need to use F6 and the special driver disk again.
