Exchange Server 2003 splits the Exchange Server 5.5 concept of sites into administrative groups and routing groups, which can be managed independently of each other when the organization is in native mode.
Back-end servers contain mailboxes and front-end servers do not. By default, an Exchange Server 2003 server is both a front-end and a back-end server.
Front-end servers can increase security by preventing remote users outside the firewall from connecting directly to servers that contain user data, such as mailboxes.
Microsoft Exchange System Management Tools can be installed on non-Exchange servers to make administration more convenient. The operating systems that the tools can be run on are Windows XP Professional SP1 and above, Windows 2000 Professional and Server SP3 and above, and Windows Server 2003.
Exchange Server 2003 components can be added or removed through the Microsoft Exchange Installation Wizard.
After Setup completes, only the account used to run Setup has Exchange Full Administrator permissions. You must delegate control at either the organization or administrative group level for other security groups or user accounts that will have an administrative role in the organization.
