Introduction

As indicated by the dictionary definition above, performance is not just speed, it is effectiveness. Things need to perform effectively to be considered useful. Your mobile application's performance will be the first and main criteria by which users will judge its quality and usefulness. Although great performance will not guarantee the success of your mobile application, the lack of acceptable performance will surely doom your efforts to failure.

Economics teaches us that excess capital creates the ability for investment and growth. Fundamentally, performance represents the excess capital that you have to invest in your mobile application's growth and development. If you have great performance, you can add features, try out new models, and extend the scope of your application. The excess capital created by your surplus of acceptable performance allows you this freedom. If your mobile application has poor performance, you are painting yourself into a corner and are doing the coding equivalent of living paycheck to paycheck. If the performance is poor or barely acceptable, you will struggle to scrape by with your existing features and you will spend all your time just keeping things barely working, making patches and hacks to just stay mediocre. There is no single thing you have more control over and no single thing that developers tend to get wrong through inattention, lack of planning, and lack of discipline. Performance counts!
