System Preferences

The System Preferences allow you to change the settings of a number of features on your computer. This will become a familiar process to you as you work with your Mac. In this little book, all I can do is point you to the System Preferences and suggest you check them out. Most of them are pretty self-explanatory.

This is the System Preferences icon that is probably in your Dock.

To open System Preferences:

The icon shown to the left should be in your Dock. Single-click on it.

You can always go to the Apple menu and choose "System Preferences…."

If you want everything on your screen to appear larger, click the Displays icon and choose a lower numbered resolution.

To open a preference pane, single-click any icon. The new pane will replace the one you see.

To come back to this main pane, single-click the "Show All" button in the upper-left of the window, or press Command L.

Once System Preferences is open, press on the System Preferences icon in the Dock to show a contextual menu from which you can choose a specific preference pane.

Desktop & Screen Saver

This is an example of the kind of thing System Preferences can do for you. The Desktop & Screen Saver preferences pane lets you customize the appearance of your Desktop and provides some amazing options for screen savers (which are animated graphics that appear on your screen when you're not using your Mac).

Click the Desktop tab (circled below) to display the Desktop preferences. You can choose the background of your Desktop. Change the color or choose a photograph or one of the abstract images provided in the folders shown below. You can also use any photo or graphic image of your choice: First put that photo or image in your Pictures folder, then choose "Pictures Folder" from the scrolling list pane shown below. When you select a folder in the list, its contents are shown in the pane on the right. Select an image and it immediately appears in the thumbnail image space, and also on the Desktop.

The list of image collections includes your entire iPhoto Library and any album collections you may have created in iPhoto.
