Other forms of Spotlight

Spotlight powers the search in the Finder window, as explained on the previous pages. But it also works in a couple of other ways. Experiment with each of the faces of Spotlight so you'll learn which one you prefer to use in particular situations.

The menu bar version of Spotlight

Exercise:
Use Spotlight in the menu bar.

1.

In the upper-right corner of your screen you see a magnifying glass. Click on it (or press Command Spacebar).

2.

In the little field that appears under the magnifying glass, enter a text phrase (called a "search string").

3.

As soon as you start typing, Spotlight starts searching, as shown below. The more letters you type, the fewer files it finds.

4.

If you see the file you're looking for, single-click on it and the file will open in its application.

5.

If you want more details and options for every file, single-click on the first option in the list, "Show All." A Spotlight window appears, as shown and explained on the following page.

The Spotlight window

As mentioned on the previous page, you can use the menu bar Spotlight to start a search, then click the "Show All" option to get more details. The Spotlight window shown below will open.

You can also open the Spotlight window directly: Hold down the Command and Option keys, then tap the Spacebar.

Exercise:
Use the Spotlight window.

1.

If you got this window through a Spotlight menu bar search, then you have items already in your window.

If you opened this window directly, type something into the search field so you have a list of results.

2.

Look carefully at the pane on the right side of the window. Click on any term to narrow your search.

In the example below, you can tell by the words in bold (with arrows pointing to them) that the search results are grouped by "Kind." They are organized (sorted) within the groups by "Date." They are limited to "Any Date," and Spotlight searched the entire "Computer."

Single-click any of the parameters in that pane to change the existing list of results!

Spotlight in applications

The search in every application on the Mac is powered by Spotlight. For instance, take another look at the Viewer window in Mail (page 152)that search field is powered by Spotlight.

In Address Book, select a person's card and then use the Action menu to Spotlight that person. Every email to or from that person or in which that person is mentioned, plus every relevant file on your Mac, will be found.
