Display item names

You can "hover" your mouse (as explained on page 21) over an icon in the Dock, and a little tool tip appears that tells you the name of the item.

1.

Without holding the mouse button down at all, just position the mouse so the arrow points on top of an icon in the Dock.

2.

Don't press the mouse button down, but just "hover," holding the mouse still. A tool tip appears. It disappears when you move the mouse away.

This technique is useful in many Mac applications. Try it whenever you see icons in a toolbar.

The tiny black triangle

The tiny black triangle you see under different icons in the Dock tells you that particular application is already open, even if you don't see signs of it anywhere. If you single-click an item in the Dock that has a triangle, that application will come to the front so you can work in it. The Finder and Dashboard are always open.
