Put an item in the Dock
To practice putting an item in the Dock, we're going to go to your Applications window and get the small word processor (an application used for typing letters or other documents) called TextEdit. We'll put it in the Dock so it's always available to you. You'll use this application in Chapter 6.
| 1. | Single-click on the Finder icon in the Dock to make sure you have an open Finder window. | | 2. | In the Sidebar of the window (as shown in Chapter 2), single-click on the Applications icon. This will display, on the right side of the same window, all of the applications that came with your Mac.
This is what the TextEdit icon looks like. | | 3. | To find the TextEdit application, type the letter T (this will select the first application that starts with the letter T, which is TextEdit). | | 4. | Press (don't click!) on the TextEdit icon and drag it down to the Dock; when the tip of the pointer is in the Dock, all of the other applications will move over. At that point, let go of the mouse button.Remember, you have to put an application on the left side of the dividing line. |
You'll notice that the TextEdit icon is still in the Applications window, plus it is in the Dock. That's exactly rightthe Dock icon will go and get the real application that is always stored in the Applications window.[View full size image] |
