The Sidebar

You have used the Sidebar a number of times already. Here are a couple of extra tips, as well as a press-and-drag practice.

1.

Position the pointer anywhere on the Sidebar edge (don't click or press yet) and it will change into a double-headed arrow, as shown circled to the left.

2.

Press-and-drag the double-headed arrow; drag to the left to minimize the amount of space the Sidebar takes up. For this exercise, drag the edge to the left until only the icons are visible, as shown below, then let go of the mouse.

3.

When only icons are visible, position your mouse over any Sidebar itemdon't click or press or anything, just hover. The tool tip with the name of the item pops up.

4.

To completely hide the Sidebar, drag the edge all the way left. Your window will look like the one shown here. Notice in the window pane you see the same folders that were in the Sidebar.

5.

To get the Sidebar back, just press-and-drag the left edge; drag to the right.

Add items to the Sidebar

You can add other items to the Sidebar. You might want to add files or folders that you use the most often. You might want to put a current project folder here, or, if your Dock is getting over-crowded, a favorite application.

Exercise 1:

1.

Find the item that you want to add to your Sidebar.

2.

Drag that item's icon to the bottom half of the Sidebar, below the horizontal dividing line.

As you drag an item to the Sidebar, a blue, horizontal line appears. This line indicates where the item will be placed when you let go. If this isn't where you want it to be placed, drag up or down in the list until the horizontal line is in the position you want.

Remove items from the Sidebar

You can remove any item from the Sidebar. This doesn't destroy anything! You are only removing an icon that represents the original fileyou are not deleting any original files at all.

To remove any item from the Sidebar, just drag it to the Desktop and it disappears in a puff of smoke, as shown below.

Drag an item out of the Sidebar to remove it.
