Add a printer to the list, if necessary

Your Mac needs to put your printer in its Printer List so you can choose to print to it and so the computer knows what that particular printer is capable of doing. For instance, if you print to a color inkjet, the Print dialog box will provide color options, but probably not paper tray options. If you print to a black-and-white PostScript laser printer you won't have any color options, but you will have paper tray options.

To add a printer to the Printer List, you can either go back to the Print dialog box in your document (4a), or you can open the Print Center directly (4b). Either way has the same result, as follows:

Exercise 4a:
Use the Print dialog box to add a printer.

1.

Turn on the printer you want to add to the list. Wait until it is fully warmed up (wait until it stops making noise and the green light is not flashing).

2.

While your document is open, go to the File menu and choose "Print."

3.

In the Print dialog box, click on the "Printer" menu and choose "Add Printer…," as shown below.

Go to Step 4 on the following page.

Exercise 4b:
Use the Printer Setup Utility to add a printer.

1.

Turn on the printer you want to add to the List. Wait until it is fully warmed up (wait until it stops making noise and the green light is not flashing).

2.

At the Desktop, open any Finder window.

3.

Single-click on the Applications icon in the Sidebar. From inside the Applications window, open the Utilities folder. Inside the Utilities folder, find the "Printer Setup Utility" icon, as shown to the left.

Double-click this icon.

Go to Step 4 on the following page.

4.

Both methods described on the previous page will open the Printer List, as shown below. This list shows you the printers the Mac knows about already (your list might be empty).

To add a printer to the List, click the "Add" icon.

5.

The "Printer Browser" window opens, as shown below.

If you don't see your printer listed, click "More Printers…." Then click on the menu, shown below-right, and choose the type of printer it is. If your Mac finds the printer you're looking for, click the "Add" button.

If you still don't see your printer in the list, check the note on the following page.

If you have an Epson printer that you connect with an Ethernet cable, choose "EPSON AppleTalk."

Ethernet cable: The connector on the end looks like a large phone line connector. To the left is an Ethernet "port" where you plug it in.

If the Epson printer connects with a FireWire or USB cable, choose that appropriate option.

If you have another kind of USB printer, you should see an option to choose "USB."

USB cable: One end is flat and rectangular. To the left is the USB symbol.

To add an AppleTalk printer, which is probably on a local network, choose "AppleTalk." If your printer is a PostScript laser printer, it is probably on an AppleTalk network whether you realize it or not. If AppleTalk is not turned on, your Mac will turn it on for you behind the scenes as soon as you choose that option.

FireWire: One end of the cable is shaped like an archway. To the left is the FireWire symbol that you'll see on the "port."

6.

Click on the printer name, then click the "Add" button.

7.

That printer is now added to the List and you will be able to choose it in the main Print dialog box. Single-click the red close button in the upper-left corner of the window to close this "Printer Browser."
