Using the printer job window

You have a printer job window for each printer that you have added to your Printer List. With this utility window you can control your print jobs, delete jobs, cancel them, queue them up for printing later, and more.

Control your print jobs

Below you see the printer job window where you can stop all printing, stop the printing of individual jobs, delete printing jobs altogether, and more.

The name in the title bar of the window is the name of the printer that is printing these particular files. When this window (shown below) is visible, you have new menu items at the top of your monitor. The following describes things you can do using the menus and the windows.

If you opened the Printer Setup Utility and you see the Printer List (as shown here) instead of the printer job window (shown at the top), just double-click on the name of the printer you are sending a file to. Then you''ll see its printer job window.

To control printing of individual documents and also of the entire printer:

SHOW JOBS:
If you are currently viewing the Printer List instead of the job window, first click on the name of the printer you are printing to. Then go to the Printers menu and choose "Show Jobs" to see which documents are lined up waiting to print (shown on the opposite page and on the following page).

Or just double-click on the name of your printer in the Printer List to get the job window.

You can also single-click on the Printer icon in the Dock while your document is in the process of printing; this will bring up the printer job window. The line of documents waiting to print is called a queue (see next page).

If you tell a document to print and it doesn''t print and you keep telling it to print over and over again, open this window and see all of those documents waiting in line to print, just like you told them (see the next page). First select their names and click the "Delete" button, then figure out what''s wrong: Is there one job clogging up the printer and the others are merely waiting, or have the jobs been stopped? (Read on.) When you have fixed the problem, print the piece again.

You''ll also see an exclamation point on the printer icon in the Dock if there''s a problem.

STOP ONE JOB from printing:
In the job window, click once on the name of a document in the List, then either click the "Hold" button or go to the Jobs menu at the top of the screen and choose "Hold Job." This does not delete the job from the queueit just puts it on hold.

STOP ALL THE DOCUMENTS from printing:
If the jobs are in the process of printing, the printer icon in the toolbar is "Stop Jobs." Single-click it to stop the entire line-up of documents waiting to print. While it is stopped, you can delete jobs, print an individual job, go to lunch, etc.

If you try to print several times and nothing goes through, check to make sure the jobs have not been stopped! You''ll know the queue has been stopped because the printer icon in the toolbar will be "Start Jobs." Plus, if you see an exclamation point in the Print dialog box, as shown on the previous page, that means the queue has been stopped.

RESUME printing one job:
If a job has been put on hold, select its name in the job window. Then click the "Resume" button, or go to the Jobs menu and choose "Resume Job."

START ALL THE DOCUMENTS to print:
If the queue has been stopped, the icon in the toolbar is "Start Jobs," as shown below. Single-click this icon to start the printing process for the entire line-up of documents. Or select one or more documents, go to the Jobs menu, and choose "Resume Job."

CANCEL a print job:
In the job window, click once on a document name to select it, then hit the Delete button in the toolbar, or go to the Jobs menu and choose "Delete Job."

You can select more than one job to delete: hold down the Command key and click on each document name you want to delete.

Keep your printer icon in the Dock

While you''re printing, a printer icon appears in the Dock, then disappears when the job is finished. If you print regularly, though, it comes in handy to have the printer more easily accessibleyou can keep it permanently in the Dock.

One way to make the icon stay in your Dock is to wait until the next time you print. You''ll see the icon in the Dock. While it''s there, press on it (don''t click!) and you''ll get the menu shown below. Choose "Keep In Dock," and the printer utility will stay there even after the printing is done.

You can do this with any application in the Dock.

If you don''t want to wait until next time you print:

1.

Open the Printer Setup Utility (it''s in the Utilities folder, which is in the Applications folder).

2.

Double-click the name of the printer you want to keep in the Dock.

3.

The printer icon will appear in the Dock, then you can press on it, as shown above, and choose "Keep In Dock."
