The entire "Save As" dialog box

If you want to know all about the Save As dialog box and how to use it, read on. It will give you more control over where you are saving files. It's not as scary as it looks.

Name your document (1), just as you have been doing.

Your document will be saved into whichever folder or disk is shown in the Where menu (2), which in the example on the opposite page is the Documents folder. This is the most important thing to notice and remember!

You see the Documents folder is selected (3), and the contents of the Documents folder (4) are shown in the column or pane to its right.

This tells you that, as it is right now, your saved file will be saved and stored inside the Documents folder.

To save into a different folder, single-click any folder name in either the Sidebar or the directory pane (4) to select that folder. That folder name will appear in the "Where" menu at the top and its contents in the next-right column. If you then click the Save button (5), your file will be saved into that folder.

Do you see the button labeled "New Folder" at the bottom of the Save As dialog box? If you single-click that button, you can name a new folder and then when you click the Save button, your new document will be saved into that folder.
