Multiple Users & Security

Mac OS X is designed to be a multiple-user system. This means that different individuals can log in and use a Mac OS X computer. Each user can install his own applications, configure his own desktop, and save his own documents. User files and setup is kept private. When each user logs in to the computer with his account, he can access only the files that belong to him or are shared.

In addition to login passwords to protect each user's private files, each user can take advantage of the keychain access feature, which enables him or her to store passwords for accessing data online or on a network. And for those users who are serious about security, Mac OS X's FileVault feature enables them to encrypt their Home folders, thus making it virtually impossible for anyone to hack in and read their files.

In this chapter, I discuss the multiple user and security features of Mac OS X.

Chapters 3 and

19 provide some additional information about how Mac OS X's directory structure is set up to account for multiple users.
