Enhancing System Security


The Security preferences pane (Figures 59 and

61 ) offers additional options for enhancing security on your computer. Here's how you can use them to make your computer more secure.

Tip

    You must be logged in as an administrator to change Security preferences pane settings.

To set system security options



1.

Choose Apple > System Preferences (Figure 1 ) or click the System Preferences icon in the Dock.

2.

Click the Security button to display the Security preferences pane (Figure 59 or

61 ).

3.

Set options in the bottom half of the window as desired:

    Require password to wake this computer from sleep or screen saver displays an Authenticate dialog when you wake your computer or deactivate the screen saver.

    Disable automatic login turns off the automatic login feature.

    Require password to unlock each secure system preference displays an Authenticate dialog when a user opens a System preferences pane that requires administrative privileges.

    Log out after

    n

    minutes of inactivity automatically logs out a user when he has been inactive for the number of minutes you specify.

    Use secure virtual memory encrypts the invisible virtual memory file your computer maintains while running.
