Starting Your Computer with Mac OS 9.x
If you plan to do a lot of work with Classic applications, you may want to start your computer with Mac OS 9.x and work without using Mac OS X at all. You can do this by selecting your Mac OS 9.x System Folder as the startup disk and restarting your computer.
Tips- Not all Macintosh models can start from Mac OS 9.x. If you bought your computer in 2003 or later, it probably can't. You can, however, run Mac OS 9 applications in the Classic environment.You may find that some large and complex Classic applications work a bit better on an older Macintosh model when you start with Mac OS 9.x.If you start your computer from Mac OS 9.x, you cannot use Mac OS X features and applications. You must restart with Mac OS X to use Mac OS X.All the differences discussed on the previous three pages apply when you start your computer from Mac OS 9.x except compatibility issuesall Mac OS 9.x applications will work when you start with Mac OS 9.x, even those that are not compatible with the Classic environment.
To restart with Mac OS 9.x
| 1. | Choose Apple > System Preferences (Figure 20 ), or click the System Preferences icon in the Dock (Figure 21 ). |
| 2. | In the System Preferences window that appears, click the Startup Disk icon. |
| 3. | In the Startup Disk preferences pane, select the folder icon for the Mac OS 9.x System Folder (Figure 48 ).Figure 48. Mac OS X's Startup Disk preferences pane.[View full size image]  |
| 4. | Click Restart. |
| 5. | If a dialog sheet like the one in Figure 49 appears, click Save and Restart.Figure 49. If this dialog appears, click Save and Restart. Figure 50. The Mac OS 9.2.2 Finder.[View full size image]  |
Tip- If a Mac OS 9.x System Folder does not appear in step 3, your computer cannot start from Mac OS 9.
To restart with Mac OS X
| 1. | Choose Apple > Control Panels > Startup Disk (Figure 46 ). |
| 2. | In the Startup Disk control panel, select the folder icon for the Mac OS X System folder (Figure 51 ).Figure 51. Mac OS 9.2.2's Startup Disk control panel.[View full size image]  |
| 3. | Click Restart.Your computer restarts from the Mac OS X System folder. |
Tip- In step 2, you may have to click the triangle beside the name of your hard disk to display the System folders inside it (Figure 51 ).
