Print & Fax

The Print & Fax preferences pane (Figures 67 and

68 ) enables you to set options for printing and faxing from within applications. You can also set options in the new Sharing pane of the Print & Fax preferences pane to share your printers with others on your network.

Figure 67. The Printing pane of the Print & Fax preferences pane.

Figure 68. The Printer pop-up menu in Print dialogs includes all printers for which you have turned on the In Menu check box.

Chapter 12 . That's where you can learn more about the Printer Setup Utility and Print Queues.

To set printing options

1.

In the Print & Fax preferences pane, click the Printing button to display its options (Figure 67 ).

2.

To determine whether a listed printer should appear in the Printer pop-up menu in Print dialogs (Figure 68 ), toggle the In Menu check box beside the printer's name in the list.

3.

To view the Print Queue for a printer, select its name in the printer list and click the Print Queue button.

4.

To configure a printer, select its name in the printer list and click the Printer Setup button. This opens the Installable Options pane of the Printer Info window (Figure 69 ) in the Printer Setup Utility.

Figure 69. Okay, so there aren't many installable options for my LaserJet 2100TN. If you're wondering why they're gray, its because this is a shared printer and cannot be changed by the eMac accessing it here.

5.

Choose options in the two pop-up menus to set basic printing options:

Selected Printer in the Print Dialog (Figure 70 ) is the default printer. If you have a preferred printer, choose its name. The Last Printer Used option always defaults to the last printer used.

Figure 70. Use this menu to specify which printer should be the default printer.

Default Paper Size in Page Setup (Figure 71 ) is the default paper size in the Page Setup dialog. Choose an option from the pop-up menu. The options that appear vary depending on the default printer.

Figure 71. Use this menu to set the default paper size. (Hmm. I'm fresh out of Choukei 3 envelopeswhatever

    they are.)

Chapter 12

Clicking the Supplies for this printer button displays a page on the Apple Store's Web site where you can find printer supplies.

To set up your computer to receive faxes

1.

In the Print & Fax preferences pane, click the Faxing button to display its options (Figure 72 ).

Figure 72. The Faxing pane of the Print & Fax preferences pane.

2.

Turn on the check box marked Receive faxes on this computer.

3.

Set other options as desired:

My Fax Number is the fax phone number that will appear in fax headers.

Answer after is the number of rings before the computer answers the phone.

Save to enables you to choose a folder in which faxes should be saved. The options are Faxes and Shared Faxes, but you can choose Other Folder and use the dialog that appears (Figure 34 ) to choose a different folder.

Email to tells your computer to e-mail a copy of the fax to the address you enter in the box.

Print on printer tells your computer to print the fax on the printer you choose from the pop-up menu.

4.

To configure your fax modem, click the Set Up Fax modem button. This displays the Fax List window in the Printer Setup Utility (Figure 73 ). Select your fax modem in the list and click the Show Info button to display its Printer Info window (Figure 74 ). Make changes as desired and close both windows to save them.

Figure 73. The Fax List window of the Printer Setup Utility, with my internal modem selected.

Figure 74. As you can see here, there aren't many options to "set up." Mac OS does most of the fax modem configuration for you.

Chapter 12 .

To share your printers & fax modem

1.

In the Print & Fax preferences pane, click the Sharing button to display its options (Figure 75 ).

Figure 75. Use the Sharing options to set up printer and fax modem sharing.

2.

Turn on the Share these printers with other computers check box.

3.

Toggle the check boxes beside each printer in the list to specify which printer(s) should be shared.

4.

To allow other network users to send faxes from your computer, turn on the Let others send faxes through this computer check box.

Chapter 12 .

The Sharing options of the Print & Fax Preferences pane makes it possible to share some printers but not others.

The ability to share your fax modem with network users is brand new in Mac OS X 10.4.
