Heading Out on a Dreamweaver Expedition

Are you eager to get going? Or does the thought of learning Dreamweaver send you running with stomach-twisting pangs of terror? Relax and remember your breathing! When you're ready, let's get started.

In Windows, choose Start > All Programs > Macromedia > Dreamweaver 8, or double-click the Dreamweaver icon on your desktop, if you chose to place one there when you installed the program.

Mac users won't see this, but the first time that you launch the program in Windows, Dreamweaver presents you with the Workspace Setup dialog box. Here, you can choose how you want Dreamweaver's initial interface to be laid out: either in Designer mode or Coder mode. It doesn't really matter which way you go, because you can always change your workspace later. For the sake of this chapter, choose Designer for now (so that your screen is similar to the ones shown here) and click OK. Dreamweaver fires up.

Speaking of long road trips, did you know that classic rockers Journey received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2005? Don't know who Journey is? Ask your parents. Or better yet, ask mine.

If you're using a Mac, double-click your hard drive's icon on the desktop, open your Applications folder, double-click the Macromedia Dreamweaver 8 folder, and double-click the Dreamweaver program icon. You can also double-click the Dreamweaver icon on your desktop, if you chose to place one there when you installed the program. Dreamweaver launches by displaying its splash screen. You'll have a few moments to daydream herethen it's back to our road trip!

Launching Dreamweaver for the first time is a momentous occasion. Quicksmash a bottle of champagne on your desk or something!

In Windows, when you launch Dreamweaver for the first time, you'll be presented with this Workspace Setup dialog box. It doesn't really matter which of the two options you choose, because you can customize the interface later.

Noteworthy

If you're up-grading from a previous version of Dreamweaver and still have that old version installed, Dreamweaver 8 will automatically import any sites that you've previously defined. However, you'll have to re-enter any usernames and passwords for your sites in the Site Definition dialog box.
