Linking Your Pages and Updating Library Items

Now you're ready to pull it all together. Hyperlinks are based on file paths (a connection between the current page and the hyperlink's destination), so you'll have to be carefulthis is a live-fire exercise. One wrong path, one missed file, and your links won't workthey'll be sending you home to mom with a broken leg and a lollypop.

Chapter 9), you're not going to be creating them by hand. With Dreamweaver, it's just a matter of pointing and clicking.

To see how the overall process works, you'll open your library item for editing and then set three text-based links on your main navigation bar: one for each of your pages. Like magic, when you save your library item, each page will automatically update. To make sure everything works, you'll then test your site in your web browser. Setting links in a library item is exactly the same as setting links directly on your page, so after this section, you'll be able to set links wherever you want. Ready? Let's move out!

Here's how to set hyperlinks and update a library item:

1.

Close any pages that you have open in Dreamweaver; then in the Assets panel's Library category, double-click your library item.

Dreamweaver opens the library item as if it were a web page.

As before, the library item looks totally different than it does on the pages that it's inserted onin this example, it looks like a mess. Remember, though, that the pages that use the library item also use the CSS style sheet that controls the look and positioning of this header content, so in your actual web site, it will look fine.

You'll begin by typing text that will serve as the hyperlink.

2.

Select the first instance of the placeholder text "global link"; then type Home.

3.

Select the second instance of "global link" and type About Us; then select the third instance of "global link" and type News and Events.

Now that you have the link text inserted, you're ready to begin setting hyperlinks to your three pages.

4.

Select the Home text that you typed.

5.

In the Property Inspector, click the Browse for File icon beside the Link field.

6.

In the Select File dialog box that appears, navigate to and select your 83 file; then click OK.

Dreamweaver creates a hyperlink from the Home text to your 83 file. It's as easy as that.

7.

Select your About Us text; then click the Browse for File icon to set a hyperlink to your AboutU103 page. Repeat these steps to set a link from the News and Events text to the Event103 file.

When you're done, you should have three hyperlinks: one to each of your pages. Now there's just a few loose ends to tidy up before you can try out your new site.

8.

At the top of your library item, select the Site Name placeholder text and type a name for your web site.

9.

Select all the subglobal links at the bottom of the library item; then press Delete.

You're not creating any more links right now.

Now your library item is ready to roll. This is the cool partyou're going to automatically update the three pages that use this library item. Updating is easy. In fact, it's as simple as saving.

10.

Choose File > Save.

11.

In the Update Library Items dialog box that appears, click OK.

Dreamweaver displays the Update Pages dialog box and updates your pages. If you'd like to see a log for the update, select the Show Log option.

12.

When Dreamweaver completes the update, click Close.

Now for the moment of truth. Did your pages really update? Will the hyperlinks actually work? In the next section, you'll take a look!
