Getting Started with Layers

The fundamental problem with web design is tha104 wasn''t built to handle page layout or design. It was developed to structure text-based content and to provide a way to jump between documents via hyper-linking. For years, web designers have wrestled wit92, trying to get it to do something it wasn''t meant to do: control a page''s layout. Early on, innovative designers began usin91 tables as a way to build a grid of rows and columns on a page. While tables did offer a way to control a page''s layout, this approach made maintaining and updating pages a real pain.

But with the development of Dreamweaver''s layers, controlling and maintaining page layout has gotten much easier. Layers are containers that you can place on your page to hold content. Anything that you can normally place directly on a pagetext, graphics, Flash movies, and so oncan sit inside a layer. You can then position the layers on your page by dragging and dropping thema luxury that the print design world has enjoyed for nearly two decades. Typically, a layers-based design uses multiple layers for each major region in the layout and is oriented to the top-left corner of the page.
