Getting Started with Multimedia

Nothing spices up a web site like a little multimedia. Multimedia typically comes in three flavors: audio, video, and Macromedia Flash.

Audio, or sound, can help establish an overall atmosphere and environment for your pages, and it's also great for voice-overs (a message from the CEO, for example). You can also provide downloadable audio files at your site: music, samples, speeches, and more.

Video on the web can be tricky. The basic problem is file size: Broadcast-quality video is massivearound 1 GB for just five minutes of footageand even today's fastest connection speeds choke under that weight. Nevertheless, short videos, especially videos with small physical dimensions, work well on the web and are easy to incorporate with Dreamweaver.

If you're totally bummed out about video on the web, just go into hibernation for five years. The web you'll awaken to will be totally transformedwe'll all be watching reruns of American Idol online and laughing at the funny clothes and haircuts. Oh waitI already do that.
