Updating Templates to Make Automatic Sitewide Changes

You've seen that templates are very easy to work with and, at the same time, are very powerful. But now, with a template up and running and controlling a few pages in your site, you're ready to see their real power. After you see this, you'll never build web sites without templates againit's that cool!

You're about to see what happens when you open your original template and make a few changes to it (maybe you're changing some formatting, setting some hyperlinks, or adjusting some formatting). When you save your template, Dreamweaver will ask you if you want to update the pages that the template controls. When you update your pages, like magic, they change to reflect the modifications that you made in your template while also retaining the content that you placed in their editable regions. The results are totally amazingand totally easy to achieve. And, of course, you can make changes to your template and update your site whenever you want.

When you update your pages, they change to reflect the modifications that you made in your template while also retaining the content that you placed in their editable regions.

When you want to update your template, you should first close any pages driven by that template that are open in Dreamweaver. If you leave pages open, you may run into problemscheck out the sidebar "Save Yourself a HeadacheClose Your Pages Before You Update."

Here's how to update your template:

1.

Close any pages that use the template that you want to update.

2.

In the Templates category of the Assets panel, double-click the template that you want to update.

Dreamweaver opens the original template file for editing. Don't forgetyou can tell that you're in the template file by the <<Template>> designation on the title bar.

3.

Make any changes that you want to your template.

For example, on the site's main navigation bar, you might set hyperlinks to your new template-driven pages that you created in the preceding section. You might also add some text and formatting or insert new images that you want to appear throughout your site.

When the update is complete, click Close.
