Return On Total Assets

Throughout the discussion on asset management, emphasis has been on understanding the makeup of the ratios employed, their relationship to supply chain tactics and, finally, what the effect is on outcomes due to changes in the numerator and denominator. This type of approach is important in any analysis, but it is particularly applicable when dealing with the all-encompassing ratio return on total assets. Even with these points in mind, a true appreciation of the significance of this ratio in terms of execution and performance requires additional knowledge regarding its origin, original purpose and role in today's globalized supply chains. It is for this reason that the discussion now turns to the income statement and the importance of net income to any organization. From that point, return on total assets will be treated in detail in Chapter 15 when the DuPont formula is analyzed.
